John Shankweiler became the Orpheus Club's Conductor in 2004, bringing the skills of a superb tenor, a master teacher of voice ensemble performance, and a sensitive interpreter of the wide variety of musical genres encompassed by the club's repertoire. While his specialty is early classical music (see below), he is an excellent jazz musician, as well as being fully in touch with cutting edge musical styles embraced by younger generations. The precision and clarity of his conducting technique is astounding. John is guiding OC singers through new territory, and the results are a thrilling experience for our Associate Members.

John Shankweiler currently teaches choral music and theater arts at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford, PA. In 1984, when he first arrived at Strath Haven, the choral department consisted of twenty-three students. Today his program includes four choirs, ranging in size from 28 students to 165 students. He is known throughout Delaware County for performing choral masterpieces with his two large ensembles, Cantata and Camerata, including Orff's Carmina Burana, Brahms' Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, Faure's Requiem, and John Rutter's Requiem and Gloria.

John's jazz choir is designed to replicate the style of college a capella ensembles. His most select ensemble, The Silvertones, has given three concert tours in northern and southern Italy. They are currently preparing for their fourth concert tour which will be spent in Sicily in March, 2005. The Pennsylvania Music Educators' Association has recognized The Silvertones as one of Pennsylvania's finest small vocal ensembles in 1996, 2002 and 2004.

Under John's direction, Strath Haven's musical theater program is known throughout the county for executing highly professional and innovative productions. John greatly appreciates the works of Stephen Sondheim, and has produced and directed six of his shows. He raises the standard of high school theater every year by inspiring his students to take chances and delve deeply into themselves in search of the meaning behind the roles they play. This year, John and his students will perform Seussical written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Since the content of the show is so relevant to people of all ages, John is taking the experience a step further and will be involving students from the entire Wallingford Swarthmore School District in all that goes into the making of a musical.

As an ensemble performer, John specializes in Early Music. He tours, performs and records with the Waverly Consort, a six-voice early music ensemble which has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning and NPR's St. Paul Sunday Morning. The current year's tour schedule includes an appearance sponsored by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society at St. Mark's Church on December 17th, 2004. John and the Waverly Consort can be heard on CBS Masterworks, Angel, and EMI labels.

As a soloist, John has performed Handel's Messiah and the Paul Winter Consort's Missa Gaia at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

John lives in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania with Carrie, his wife and his three beautiful, musical children: Henry, age 8; Simon, age 6; and Charlie who was three years old in October, 2006. In his free time, John enjoys swimming, running, sailing, hiking, and making music with his family.

In the spring of 2000, Clyde R. Dengler, Jr. completed his twentieth year as Music Director and Conductor of the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia.

A native of Delaware County, "Bud", as he is known to Orpheus members, received his music education and choral conducting degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Beginning in 1953, he has served, in turn, on the music faculty of three Pennsylvania school organizations: the Upper Darby School District where, through the years, he taught choral music at all levels, elementary through high school; at West Chester University, he trained and conducted the Freshman Chorus and the Masterworks Chorale in the School of Music; from 1986 to 1995 he chaired the music department of The Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, Pa. While at Irwin's, the Upper School singing groups appeared three times with the Orpheus Club in the Academy of Music.

His Upper Darby high school choral groups have been featured at state education conferences and on three occasions in performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. A select choir of his elementary school students was featured each week for one year on the CBS television network.

Mr. Dengler is a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the American Choral Directors Association. Over the years, he has served as a choral competition adjudicator and has guest conducted festival choirs in Carlisle, Bethlehem, Langhorne, Downingtown and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1997 he guest conducted the Delaware All-State Senior High School Chorus festival.

A certified chief school administrator, Mr. Dengler has served as a principal, district supervisor of music and district director of personnel services.

Mr. Dengler has directed various church choirs in Norristown, Lansdowne, Wayne and Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Currently, he directs a church choir in Chestertown, Maryland. In addition, he has developed and directed employee choral groups sponsored by well-known corporations including the Sun Company, Honeywell and Fidelity Bank (now First Union).

Moving recently to Kent County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Mr. Dengler has founded the Chester River Chorale, a 48 voice community chorus of adult men and women.
